5 Ways to Start Your Year Strong

As the first day of school gets closer, it’s easy to focus on one big task… choosing curriculum. While certainly important, I’ve learned over the years that a successful homeschool year is about so much more than the books on our shelves.

One of the things I’ve appreciated most about homeschooling through our charter school is that there are so many resources available to help us stay connected, find community, and enrich our homeschool experience. Here are five simple tips to help start this year strong.

1. Make the Most of Your Calendar

If you haven’t explored the calendar on The Bridge yet, now is the perfect time. One feature I love is that you can subscribe to specific calendars, including Park Day & Meet Ups, Lending Library Visits, Clubs, and many more. Instead of having to remember to check for new events every week or month, they’ll automatically appear on your calendar. One trick is to subscribe using your student's school Google account or create a separate calendar just for homeschooling. Keeping everything in one place has made planning our week so much easier.

2. Attend the Virtual Back to School Meeting

As your HST begins reaching out, be sure to add the Back to School meeting to your calendar. These meetings aren’t just for new families; they are for ALL of our families. Each year brings new programs, updated resources, and helpful reminders that can make the year run more smoothly. It’s also a great opportunity to meet your local HST team and Instructional Team Advisor (ITA). Check the calendar on The Bridge for this year's date and times.

3. Try a Club or Two

One of the easiest ways to add some fun to your homeschool routine is to check out the Clubs program. Whether your child loves art, music, hiking, STEM, or wants to explore something completely new, there’s usually something that fits their interests. From Sequoia Studio virtual clubs to local hiking clubs, there’s always an opportunity to connect with others while trying something different. The best part? 4. Plan Around Field Trips

If you’ve ever chatted with me, you probably already know that I LOVE our Field Trips Program! Many of our field trips return year after year, which means you can build learning around them. A few years ago, my family did a unit study on marine biology, and we used several school-sponsored field trips to make the learning experience unforgettable. We turned it into a multi-day adventure, including a whale watching tour, tide pools, local museums, and more. This brought everything we had been learning to life. To this day, my son knows so many facts about jellyfish.

Whether your child loves theater, history, science, animals, or hands-on experiences, there’s a field trip (or two) that can help make learning memorable and fun!

5. Sign Up for Homeschool Boot Camp

Even after several years of homeschooling, I’m always looking for new ideas, better planning strategies, and little things that can make our days run more smoothly. One thing I've learned is that supporting my kids starts with making sure I feel equipped and confident, too. Whether I'm listening to a homeschool podcast, reading a new book, or participating in a parent education program, I always come away with a few new ideas to try.

I love that it is a self-paced program with practical lessons, opportunities to ask questions, receive feedback, and learn more about available programs and resources. Every homeschool journey looks a little different, and that’s one of the things I love most. My biggest encouragement is to take advantage of the resources available to you, stay connected, and don’t be afraid to try something new. The best part? You don't have to do everything. Even choosing one or two of these ideas can help your family start the year feeling prepared, supported, and excited for what's ahead.
