The 2025 Post 6604 VFW award was recently presented to Clarksville HST and VA teacher Captain Elizabeth Platt by Post 6604 Commander Robert M. Lee, Jr. A veteran in the US Army and California National Guard, Captain Platt founded our schools' 434th California Cadet Corps Battalion in 2021. Since then, she has worked with her students, building confidence, winning state-level competitions, leading them in community service, and instilling pride for their accomplishments and sense of civic responsibility.

The Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award is a national program run by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. This program aims to honor teachers who work to instill national pride by promoting civic responsibility, flag etiquette, and patriotism.

“This program has challenged me to grow both professionally and personally,” Captain Platt shared. “There have been moments of failure, but each challenge has pushed me to improve, for myself and for the cadets.”

While only about 5% of students go on to serve in the military, Captain Platt emphasizes that the program's benefits extend far beyond military service. All students gain valuable leadership skills, discipline, and a sense of responsibility that will serve them well in any path they choose. Platt’s influence is enduring. One of the battalion’s first commanding officers recently returned after graduation to assist with leadership labs, showing the lifelong commitment Captain Platt inspires in her students.

Captain Platt is excited about the future of the battalion. She’s passionate about a new archery program allowing students to become certified. Looking ahead, she’s also excited about continuing the summer encampment. This immersive two-week experience allows cadets to explore specialized skills like scuba diving, drone piloting, medic training, firefighting, survival, and mountaineering. Military science is an excellent way for students to develop lifelong skills; you do not need to move on to a career in the military to take advantage of this enriching opportunity. The upcoming Grit Games, held on May 16th, is a great way to participate and become involved.

From all of us at SGCA, congratulations to Captain Platt on this well-earned recognition. We are cheering you on as your nomination moves to the state level, and we couldn’t be more proud of everything you’ve accomplished. Your commitment to our students is truly inspiring, and we can’t wait to see where this journey takes you next!
